| Ennui over electricity |
There's a joke making rounds presently. A young boy comes rushing to his father: "Dad, a guest has come!" The father replies, "Tell him to stay." A little while later the boy rushes in again, "Dad, the electricity has come." The dad responds, "Tell it to stay too!"
If only it was that simple.
There was a time when electricity would fail once a day and people would complain at the daily power outage. Now it goes almost every alternate hour, but surprisingly the initial protests and frustration seems to have changed to a sense of complacency.
There could be two explanations for this ennui over electricity. One is that people simply have got used to the frequent load-shedding and couldn't be bothered to complain over what they cannot cure. The other is that almost all industries, offices, apartments and houses of the people who depend so heavily on electricity, have generators to carry them through the power cuts. So when the electricity goes, the most may they complain about is missing out on an episode of a popular serial or having one less fan to stay cool.
However, the electricity cuts are getting so very frequent that the generators are guzzling diesel like nobody's business. And with the price of diesel being what it is, people's patience is fast running out. |
