The Cheapest Million
A one million pound banknote, believed to be one of only two in existence, sold at only 78,000 pounds at auction. The eight-inch-wide green note, which dates back to 1948, is no longer legal tender.
It was issued by the Treasury in connection with the Marshall Aid Plan to pump US money into Europe after the Second World War. The million pound banknote, the eighth of nine produced over a period of six weeks, was sold by specialist auctioneers. The note, numbered 000008, was issued after the World War and the Marshall plan was a programme of funding given to Western Europe by the United States to help with recovery after the war.
Another £1,000,000 note numbered 000007 was sold for £8,000 in 1977, through a private sale. Only two survived as they were presented as mementoes to the respective American and British Treasury Secretaries. The others were destroyed. Number 000008 has been entered for sale by a banknote collector Bill Parkinson, from, Burnley, Lancashire, along with other world banknotes. Barnaby Faull, director of banknotes at Spink, said the note was on Bank of England watermarked paper. “It is one of the rarest examples of British currency around today and is the highest denomination note,” he said. |
